Portion Control!

What a Meal!

After hearing my stomach sound like the Troy University’s Marching Band, the server finally arrived at the table with my order.  As she positioned the dish in front of me, I was overwhelmed with the amount of food that was on it.  The meal could have easily fed two people — with a “to-go box” to go along with it (lol). Even though I could have ate the entire dish, I decided to eat a portion of it and save the rest for later. Remember, never eat until you’re stuffed, put the folk down when you’re satisfied. 1234662015264326 Portion Control!I know many of you have experienced similar situations in restaurants. It doesn’t matter how much is served to you, YOU have the choice to eat what is appropriate for you and keep the rest for a later meal. That experience leads me to this….

What Is Your Portion Control IQ?

Arm yourself with these portion control techniques and tips the next time you go out to a restaurant or any other food outlet.

  • 3 ounces of meat — EQUALS — A deck of playing cards

  • 1 serving of fish — EQUALS — The size of your checkbook

  • A medium apple — EQUALS — A tennis ball

  • 1 ounce of cheese — EQUALS — 4 stacked dice

  • 1 cup of brown rice — EQUALS — The size of your fist

  • 1 ounce of nuts — EQUALS — The palm of your hand

  • 2 tablespoons of natural PB — EQUALS — The size of your thumb (from joint to tip of nail)

Hopefully these visual measuring tips will help you achieve close to a serving size. When just starting out, these tips can be a big eye-opener.  So, next time you’re out having a delicious dinner make sure you’re only eating the right amount of foods and not the over-sized portions you’re being served.

Healthy Alternatives

Another thing to keep in mind when order is:  Always try and order your dish Grilled, Baked, Broiled, or Steamed.  Be aware of the special sauces that cover your grilled entree’.  Have the server place the sauce on the side or don’t order it at all.  Also, if you’re not sure how your order is prepared ask the server, and if he or she doesn’t know, have them go ask the chef.  The point is, you’re paying for the food and you need to know what you’re eating. And of course, do it in a polite manner (lol). Until next time, eat something healthy for me.

Eat for health and wellness,
